06 · WHERE I STAND

How do we make it easier to invest, expand and stay in Cornwall?

The practical side of economic development matters: predictable approvals, serviced land, useful business support, workforce needs and follow-up with employers already here.

MY POSITION

Where I stand

I care about the parts of economic development that businesses actually experience: how long an approval takes, whether land is serviced, whether they can get a clear answer, and whether the City follows up after the ribbon cutting.

I also want incentives to have a clear public purpose. If public resources are used to support a project, residents should be able to understand the expected benefit and whether it happened.

These are the factual pieces I am using as the baseline. They are separated from my opinion on purpose.

What Council actually controls

Council influences land use, servicing, local incentives, capital infrastructure and the municipal processes businesses encounter. Broader taxes, trade policy, immigration and most labour-market programs are primarily provincial or federal.

What I would ask for

Track approval experience

Measure recurring delays and the reasons behind them instead of relying only on anecdotes.

Talk to existing employers

Retention and expansion deserve the same attention as attracting new investment.

Connect infrastructure to growth

Servicing and transportation decisions should reflect where employment and investment are actually growing.

Measure incentives

Report the public outcome attached to any significant municipal incentive or support program.
